Research Professionals

Andrés Fontana
Postdoc
Andrés Fontana received his Ph.D. degree in high frequency electronics from the University of Limoges, Limoges, France, in 2022. He is currently a post-doctoral researcher in the Advanced RF Technologies (ART) Group at Tyndall National Institute. His research interests include RF active and passive devices and subsystems, MMIC design, additive manufacturing and heterogeneous integration technologies for wireless communication applications.

Deepal Patil
Postdoc
Deepal Patil earned her B.Tech. degree from Shivaji University, Kolhapur, India, in 2015, and her MTech. degree in electronics and communication engineering from CHRIST University, Bengaluru, India, in 2018. She successfully completed her Ph.D. at the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, India, in 2023.
During 2017-2018, she served as a “Project Trainee” at CSIR-National Aerospace Laboratory (CSIR-NAL), Bengaluru, and later worked as a Research Assistant at CHRIST University. In this role, she played a key part in establishing the anechoic chamber radio-frequency (RF) Laboratory. Currently, she is a Post-doctoral Researcher with the Advanced RF Technologies group at Tyndall National Institute in Cork, Ireland.
Her research interests encompass RF energy-harvesting systems, additive manufacturing of RF circuits and antennas, metamaterials, and frequency-selective surfaces (FSSs). Ms. Patil is an IEEE Antenna Propagation (AP) Society and Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) member.

Ghassen Brinis
research Engineer
Ghassen Brinis recently joined our research center as a Research Manufacturing Engineer, bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for innovation. After five successful years in the industry, where he progressed from a mechanical design engineer to leading projects in a senior capacity, Ghassen has honed his skills in tackling complex manufacturing challenges.
An Electrical and Electromechanical Engineer by training, Ghassen earned his BS and MS degrees from ISET Rades and ESPRIT School of Engineering in Tunisia. His expertise and forward-thinking approach will be instrumental in driving projects focused on additive manufacturing and process development for cutting-edge RF applications. Ghassen is eager to collaborate and explore new possibilities that push the limits of technology and manufacturing.

Michael Wilson Aidoo
Postdoc
Michael Wilson Aidoo (Member, IEEE) holds a B.S. degree in Mathematics from the University of Education, Winneba, Ghana. He also obtained his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in electronic science and technology, from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC), in 2020 and 2024 respectively. He has authored or coauthored several publications in internationally refereed journals and conferences. His research interests include electromagnetic fields and microwave/RF technology, with focus on frequency selective circuits, especially on bandpass filters, antennas, and power dividers. During his master’s and doctoral studies at UESTC, he received several awards including, “academic achievement award”, and “excellent performance award”, in 2019, 2021 and 2023. He is a reviewer for several reputable SCI journals, including some IEEE Transactions and Letters, and other Wiley journals. He is licensed and enrolled in the class of professional engineers (electrical/electronic division) of Ghana Institution of Engineers.

Doctoral Research Students

Ajay Mothe
PhD Student
Ajay Mothe is a dedicated researcher and engineer specializing in RF & antenna design. He received MTech in RF & Microwave Engineering from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), and BE in Electronics and Telecommunication from Trinity Academy of Engineering (TAE, Pune) in 2021 and 2018 respectively. He has also been part of cocurricular activities such as being part of IEEE student chapter, key organiser for technical events, member of different student activity groups.
He also has 2 years of work experience (from 2021 to 2023) with one of the space space start-up in India, Skyroot Aerospace. He was working on design, analysis and testing of RF and antenna components for rockets, where he also became a part of successful rocket launch mission. With a strong academic foundation, a track record of achievements and contributions, and industrial background, Ajay brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the field.
Currently he is a PhD student with University College Cork (UCC), and a member of Advanced RF Technology Group, Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland. His research interest includes 3D printed RF and antenna subsystems.

Kevin Martin
PhD Student
Kevin Martin received his BS Electronics Engineering and MS Electrical Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman, in 2015 and 2018, respectively. He is currently a PhD student with University College Cork (UCC), and a member of the Advanced RF Technology Group, Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland. His research interests include antennas, self-interference RF cancellers, RF filters, and in-band full-duplex systems.

Kexin Li
PhD Student
Kexin Li received the bachelor’s degree in communication engineering from Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing, China, in 2019, and the master’s degree in electromagnetic fields and microwave technology from Southeast University, Nanjing, China, in 2022. She is currently working toward the Ph.D. degree in Electrical and electronic engineering with the University College Cork, Cork, Ireland. Her main research focuses on the design of reconfigurable RF front-end components.

Mohammed Nasser
PhD Student
Mohammed Nasser received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The Islamic University of Gaza, Gaza, Palestine, in 2017, and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Akdeniz University, Antalya, Turkey, in 2020. He is currently a Graduate Student with the Tyndall National Institute and the School of Engineering, University College Cork, Ireland. Mr. Nasser is a member of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society. His current research interests include designing reconfigurable planar and acoustic-resonator-based RF/microwave filters.

Steven Cheng
PhD Student
Steven Cheng received his Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering and Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2015 and 2017 respectively. He is currently a PhD student with Tyndall National Institute and University College Cork. He is also a member of the Advanced RF Technology Group at Tyndall National Institute, Ireland. His research interests include RF amplifiers, LNAs, co-designed filter-amplifiers, and reconfigurable active-passive RF components.

Zixiao Zhang
PhD Student
Zixiao Zhang is a PhD student at the Tyndall National Institute at University College Cork. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Information Engineering from Huazhong University of Science and Technology in 2016 and her Master’s degree in Electromagnetic Fields and Microwaves from the same university in 2019.
Her current research focuses on the synthesis, design, and characterization of reconfigurable non-reciprocal RF components.

Master Research Students

Berkay Dogan
Master Student
Berkay Doğan is a Master’s student in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at University College Cork. He was born in Niğde, Turkey. After graduating from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Dokuz Eylul University in 2023, he commenced his Master’s degree at University College Cork. Currently, he works as a postgraduate researcher at Tyndall National Institute, focusing on research areas related to reconfigurable filter and cavity filter design. Apart from his career, he is also a bass guitarist and a green belt in taekwondo.

Sai Chaitanya Petchetty
Master Student
Sai Chaitanya Petchetty is a Master’s student at Electrical and Electronics Engineering at University College Cork. He received his Bachelor’s degree (B. Tech) from Vardhaman College of Engineering in 2023. He also has 1.5 years of experience as RF and Antenna Design Engineer at Skyroot Aerospace. He was involved in the design, analysis, and testing of RF and antenna components for rockets.
Currently he is a postgraduate researcher at Advanced RF Technologies Group, Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland. His research interests include tuneable filters and acoustic filters.

Zehan Guo
Master Student
Zehan Guo received his bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at University College Cork in 2023. He is currently a Master of Research Student with University College Cork, and a member of the Advanced RF Technologies Group, Tyndall National Institute, Cork, Ireland. His research interests include millimetre wave (mmWave) tunable phase shifters, radio frequency (RF) integrated circuit (IC) low noise amplifiers (LNAs), and multi-port RF waveguide switches.
